Why Flies are pests?
Through disease they spread such as E. Coli and Salmonella, flies pose a health risk to humans, livestock and pets. Some flies such as horseflies can even bite animals and humans.
Flies usually reproduce very quickly (e.g. as little as 8 days for Fruit Flies) and every sign of activity must be addressed immediately in order to avoid serious infestations.
What Flies do I have?
It is essential to identify the fly species in order to look for the breeding area and eradicate them efficiently. You can check the links to our Pest Guide below to identify the most common species of flies in Ireland. If you cannot find the fly you are looking for just send us a few samples in a small sealed container and we will identify them for you.
Preventing Flies with Fly Pest controlling
Sanitation, Cleaning & Proofing
You can prevent a lot of fly problems by doing the following:
- (Outdoor) keep your compost bin and wheelie bins clean and closed. Fly maggots could easily infest these in the summer months
- Clean your kitchen thoroughly. Small food residues such as cakes or cut fruits attract flies
- Clean and disinfect your kitchen bin regularly
- Your kitchen bin should be covered with a lid at all times
- Strong smells attract flies so if you have something rotten in your bin close the bin bag and bring it to your wheelie bin immediately
- Feed your pets at regular times and do not leave pet food exposed permanently, especially outside. Rinse pet food dishes and remove spillages after every meal
- Get Fly Screens Mesh Mesh fitted to your windows and doors. This is the most efficient way to keep flies out

Frequently Asked Questions
-
A sudden increase in flies usually indicates a nearby breeding source. For bluebottles, this is often a dead animal or bird in the attic, chimney, or cavity wall. For houseflies, it is typically an exposed food source, compost bin, or uncovered bin. Cluster flies appearing indoors in autumn or winter are overwintering — they enter through small gaps in the building fabric to hibernate and are not breeding indoors.
-
Bluebottles are larger than houseflies and have a distinctive metallic blue or green abdomen. They breed in decaying meat, dead animals, and occasionally pet food. Houseflies are smaller, dull grey-brown, and breed in organic waste, food scraps, and manure. Both carry bacteria on their bodies and feet, but bluebottles are generally associated with more serious contamination sources.
-
Cluster flies enter buildings in late summer and autumn through tiny gaps in the roof, around window frames, soffit vents, and wall openings. They are looking for a warm place to hibernate over winter and are attracted to the south-facing sides of buildings. They do not breed indoors — larvae develop in earthworms in garden soil during summer. Sealing entry points in early autumn is the most effective prevention.
-
Yes. Flies pick up bacteria on their feet and body hair when feeding on waste, and transfer these to food surfaces and preparation areas. They can spread E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter among other pathogens. This is why fly control is a legal requirement under HACCP regulations for all food handling businesses.
-
Fruit flies breed in fermenting organic matter — overripe fruit, spilled drinks, and residue in drain traps. The first step is removing all breeding sources: dispose of overripe fruit, clean drain traps thoroughly, empty and clean bins regularly, and wipe down surfaces where spills may have dried. For persistent infestations, our technicians can treat drain traps and breeding areas professionally.
