Bedbugs feed only on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded hosts. They do not transmit diseases, but can cause irritation and swelling at the site of the bite. Scratching the skin can in some cases result in local infections.

Signs of a Bedbug Infestation

Bedbugs are difficult to spot directly but leave several reliable signs:

• Blood spots on bedding — small rust-coloured spots on sheets, pillowcases, or mattress seams from crushed bugs or bedbug excreta
• Dark faecal spots — small dark ink-like spots on mattress seams, bed frames, skirting boards, and behind headboards
• Shed skins — pale yellow husks left behind as nymphs moult through five growth stages
• Live bugs — flat, oval, mahogany-coloured insects in mattress seams, behind headboards, inside bed frames, or in furniture near the bed
• Bites — typically appear as itchy red welts in lines or clusters, most commonly on areas exposed during sleep (neck, arms, shoulders). Note: bites alone cannot confirm bedbugs as many insects bite similarly
• Sweet musty odour — large infestations produce a distinctive sweet, musty smell

How Did I Get Bedbugs?

Bedbugs have nothing to do with hygiene — they are hitchhikers that travel on luggage, second-hand furniture, clothing, and bedding. The most common sources in Ireland include:

• Returning from travel — hotels, hostels, and Airbnb accommodation are the most common source
• Second-hand furniture — particularly mattresses, sofas, and bed frames
• Visitors bringing bedbugs in on luggage or clothing
• Shared laundry facilities in apartment blocks
• Adjacent apartments or hotel rooms — bedbugs can move between units through walls and electrical conduits

Why DIY Bedbug Treatment Rarely Works

Bedbugs are among the most difficult pests to eliminate for several reasons. They hide in cracks and seams that are almost impossible to treat fully with surface sprays. Eggs are resistant to most insecticides and hatch several weeks after treatment. Some Irish bedbug populations have developed resistance to pyrethroid-based insecticides — the active ingredient in most consumer products.

Professional treatment uses a combination of residual insecticide applied directly to all identified harborage sites, dust insecticide in wall voids and electrical outlets, and follow-up inspections to catch newly hatched nymphs. Heat treatment (raising the room temperature to 50°C+ for several hours) is the most effective single-treatment method and kills all life stages including eggs.
