Indian Meal Moths

These moths like to feed on dried fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, chocolate, candies, bird seeds, dog food, powdered milk, dried red peppers and sugary foods. Attracted to the light, Indian Meal Moths are found throughout the world in locations where food is stored, such as grocery stores.

How to Find and Eliminate an Indian Meal Moth Infestation

Indian meal moths are almost always introduced into Irish homes on infested food — most commonly bird seed, dried fruit, nuts, pasta, flour, or cereal bought from a shop where the infestation was already present. The challenge is that the infestation is often well established before it is noticed, as larvae feed inside packaging and the first sign is often the adult moth rather than the larvae.

What to look for when checking food packaging:

• Webbing — fine silk webbing on the surface of food or inside packaging is the most reliable sign of active larvae
• Larvae — cream-coloured caterpillars approximately 12mm long with a distinctive dark head capsule, found inside or on the surface of food
• Faecal pellets — tiny dark pellets mixed into the food
• Clumping — food that has become stuck together by silk threads
• Cocoons — pale silk cocoons attached to the inside corners of cupboards, on packaging, or on walls near stored food

What to do:

1. Remove every item from the affected cupboard
2. Check each item carefully — discard any infested products in outdoor bins in sealed bags
3. Vacuum the cupboard thoroughly, including corners, cracks, and the door seal
4. Wipe all surfaces with a vinegar and water solution
5. Store all remaining dry goods in airtight glass or hard plastic containers — Indian meal moths can chew through cardboard and thin plastic packaging
6. Place pheromone moth traps in the affected cupboard to catch remaining adult males and monitor for re-infestation

If moths are appearing repeatedly despite clearing out cupboards, the infestation source may be in a different location — inside wall voids, in a rarely used cupboard, or in dried goods stored in a garage or utility room. Check all dried food storage areas throughout the property.
