German Cockroaches (Blattella germanica)
Appearance
The Adult is 20-25mm and honey coloured with two dark, longitudinal stripes on the “shield” at the front of its body. The female carries an egg sack on the end of her abdomen which contains 30 to 40 eggs which will hatch into nymphs or baby cockroaches. Newborns become adults in as little as 36 days.
Habits
German cockroaches prefer warm kitchens and bathrooms inside buildings. They are commonly found around dishwashers, fridges and other warm cracks and crevices. They are nocturnal insects and are rarely seen during the day. They feed on all types of food and just about anything with nutritional value. Cockroaches most commonly enter buildings via paper products or packaging such as grocery bags, cardboard boxes and drink cartons.
Threats
Cockroaches have been reported to spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, six kinds of parasitic worms, and at least seven other kinds of human pathogens. They can potentially carry diseases such as Gastro-enteritis, Dysentery and some tests show they have been linked to Asthma. Allergens may be ingested where foods are contaminated with droppings or inhaled when dried droppings become part of the house dust.
German Cockroach Prevention
- Sealing gaps around plumbing, wall outlets and switch plates will prevent cockroach migration from infested areas to others parts of the building.
- Removing clutter (boxes, bags, clothing, toys, food, books, papers etc.) eliminates cockroach harbourages and breeding areas.
- It is essential to keep all areas of the home, especially the kitchen and bathroom, uncluttered and free of debris.
- Baits are a particularly effective form of roach control for this species, but precise placement in cracks and crevices near harbourages is critical.
