Houseflies (Musca domestica)
Appearance
Adult house flies are dark grey and can grow to one-quarter of an inch long. They usually live between 15 and 25 days.
Houseflies pupae grow to a size and shape similar to rat droppings and are often mistaken in bin sheds in apartment blocks.
Habits
Houseflies are attracted to any accessible food or organic waste. As they are only able to feed on liquids they turn many solid foods into a liquid so they can digest.
Threats
Houseflies have been known to carry over 100 varieties of disease-causing germs, which makes them unwelcome house guests.
In particular, houseflies can transmit a wide range of disease-causing microbes, including those responsible for food poisoning, dysentery, tuberculosis, cholera and parasitic worm infections.
Prevention
- Organic material should not be left where it might attract flies.
- Remove trash regularly and use well-sealing garbage receptacles.
- Use Fly screens on doors and windows to prevent fly entry.
